The big news is that Ford’s Super Duty line of trucks is getting ready to adopt an aluminum platform. A few spy images of a test mule caught in the desert have confirmed that the next generation of heavy-duty pickups is definitely going to get rid of the steel body. So, the 2016 Ford F-250, along with the F-350 and F-450 models, will be made of modern aluminum body panels. The Super Duty trucks will follow in the footsteps of the light-duty F-150 that has already received an aluminum chassis for the 2015 model year.
The 2016 Ford F-250 is expected to undergo a thorough redesign both inside and outside. The American automaker is aiming at reducing the curb weight of its popular trucks, thus increasing their fuel economy and performance. Aside from aluminum body panels and suspension components, the 2016 F-250 will also feature magnesium parts such as the radiators and steering system elements. The 2015 Ford F-150 has shed almost 700 pounds of its curb weight, enhancing the fuel economy and towing capability substantially. Similar effect is expected in the next-generation F-250, although it won’t feature as much aluminum as its lighter sibling.
2016 Ford F-250 Diesel
According to the spy photos, the prototype was powered by a turbo diesel engine. It’s very likely that it had the 6.7-liter „Power Stroke“ V8 that has recently been revised for the 2015 F-Series Super Duty trucks. The upgraded engine now produces 440 horsepower and 860 pound-feet of torque, which is a 40 hp and 60 lb-ft increase compared to the previous version. The engine is expected to carry over unchanged in the 2016 Ford F-250. Apart from the more powerful diesel powertrain, the new F-250 will be available with the base 6.2-liter gasoline V8 as well. It currently gives 385 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. However, this unit is very likely to be added with direct-injection in order to improve its fuel economy. As for the transmission, Ford is currently developing a 10-speed automatic in cooperation with GM. We expect to see this heavy-duty specific transmission in the 2016 F-250.
2016 Ford F-250 Release
The 2016 Ford F-250 (alongside the F-350 and F-450 models) is likely to make its debut by the end of 2015. The sales are expected to start in early 2016.
