The second-generation GMC Canyon made its first public appearance at this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit. However, General Motors is already working on significant updates due to arrive for the 2016 model year. Namely, the 2016 GMC Canyon alongside the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado will be fitted with Duramax diesel engines. The new turbo-diesel engines are expected to make the two models more competitive in the midsize truck segment.
2016 GMC Canyon Duramax Specs
The 2016 GMC Canyon won’t be the first GM’s vehicle to be powered by the 2.8-liter Duramax engine. The company has already been using the same mill in the global Colorado since 2012. This time, the U.S.-spec Colorado and Canyon pickups will actually be fitted with a second generation of the Duramax diesel. Codenamed XLD28, the engine will be built in a Thailand facility. It will feature quite a few new parts that should give it an enhanced performance in the 2016 Canyon. The 2.8-liter is expected to generate 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Rumor has it that the six-speed automatic transmission will be replaced with a new eight-speed automatic developed by GM. All these alterations are actually focused on improving the Canyon’s fuel economy substantially.
Apart from the new engine and transmission, the 2016 GMC Canyon will offer other technological enhancements as well. Probably the most likely are new Magnetic Ride Control shock absorbers. New trim levels such as the Work Truck are also rumored when it comes to the 2016 Canyon. Of course, we expect a Denali version that builds on the SLT trim level to be offered. The 2016 GMC Canyon Denali is expected to offer more chrome externally and better interior equipment. In addition to that, it could be fitted with a unique 4.3-liter LV3 V6 engine. As for the new appearance packages, we expect to see a new SLT Chrome Edition (replete with chrome accents), a Midnight Edition (blacked-out looks) and an All Terrain Adventure Edition (off-roading equipment).
The 2016 GMC Canyon is likely to go on sale in late 2015. Unfortunately, the pricing is yet to be announced.
