The Frontier pickup truck along with its NP300 Navara twin have remained largely unchanged since 2005. After a series of teasers, Nissan has presented the new-generation Navara that is sold primarily on Asian and South American markets. That has lead many to anticipate the US-specs Frontier to follow in its footsteps and debut as a 2016 model. The 2016 Nissan Frontier is expected to bring the long-needed updates to this mid-size hauler.
2016 Nissan Frontier Redesign
When it comes to the new sheet-metal, the 12th generation Frontier will undergo a subtle evolution, rather than a complete makeover. The 2016 Nissan Frontier will share much of its styling cues with the rest of the company’s lineup. Its front end will be dominated by the familiar V-shaped grille that has already been applied on some of the latest Nissan models. Also, the new larger headlights and taillights will feature LED technology. The most noticeable change that comes with the new design is a more deeply sculpted body.
2016 Nissan Frontier Diesel
More substantial changes are expected to take place under the hood of the 2016 Nissan Frontier. Namely, the next-generation is likely to introduce a diesel powertrain for the very first time. Earlier this year, Nissan unveiled a prototype Frontier powered by a Cummins diesel engine. We expect to see the same 2.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that generates 200 horsepower and an impressive 350 pound-feet of torque. One of its biggest upsides is the enhanced fuel economy estimated at 21.6 mpg combined. When compared to the current V6 engine, it is around 35 percent more efficient. As for the transmission, the diesel-powered Frontier is most likely to get a ZF eight-speed automatic. The gasoline-burning version is likely to retain the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, while the V6 will continue to be optional.
According to Nissan’s Chief Planning Officer, Andy Palmer, the 2015 NP300 Navara „sets new benchmarks for performance, toughness, versatility and running costs.“ Since the global Navara has always shared most of its features with its American cousin, the 2016 Nissan Frontier is expected to offer a similar package once it hits the showrooms. It’s likely to go on sale by the end of 2015.
